Newcomer Caitlin Mazur's Him starts out with a bang (actually a car crash) that skillfully and immediately puts the reader into the story. An obviously adept writer, her prose style leaves many...who have far more impressive stats on Amazon...in the dust.
"Him" brings you immediately into the mystery of the story with the main character, Amelia, upside down and suffering from a car wreck. How did it happen? Why? And more importantly, who? You want to know more. I was taken in by the well written opening.

I'm delighted to include Patty Jansen's Ambassador 1: Seeing Red among my "select few." Deftly and swiftly, her beginning shifts into high, machine-gunning intriquing clues vis a vis later reveals. One knows just enough about what's going on to continue reading without scratching one's head, but not enough to make the whole book a fait accompli. Quick immersion in tight, realistic action promises a great read.
No matter what Patty Jansen writes, there is always that underlying personality that makes her books interesting AND there are her sometimes wildly imaginative worlds that forgo the bounds of what we all know and expect. They give us something entertaining and surprising. And she is Australian. If that comment doesn't make sense then you will have to just read her stories to see what I mean. It is meant in a good way.

From the opening pages, the reader gets drawn into a world of intrigue and suspense. The writer continues to hold your attention without fail, don't miss this one, it reads like a binge-worthy show on Netflix!

Monticelli's original Italian has been translated to English for her Red Desert series, giving a charming flavor to the prose. Her characters are 3d, and her hard sci-fi setting is researched impeccably. Novella-length book one, "Point of no return," serves as an introduction, constructing the hooks that power future volumes and ramping up the tension and mystery.
