The blurb makes this sound like a classic lost in the woods with scary things happening, but it's not. This is an ambitious book that really makes you want to read it with all the lights on in the house. This really left me guessing at every turn.
But above all of that--keeping me in suspense enough to want to read to the end--the writing is just wonderful and the descriptions are absolutely fantastic. I don't want to put any spoilers in here, but let me just say that when Hosby's characters feel pain, you do, too, and when they are afraid, you are, too. I can't remember the last time I read a book in this genre that really gripped me like this.

I loved this book. Lots of tension, lots of mystery, great characters and humour throughout.
Compelling beginning to this conspiracy-theory plot focusing on the Middle East, Russia and the questionable role of various operators within the US government. Interesting likeable characters. Reads very authoritatively on all things military and security service related.

Parris writes compellingly and with such bold conviction. The plotline draws you in right away. The characters are interesting, in the way real people are when you sit and watch them. You can't stop thinking about them when you're not reading about them. Well worth the time.
I've recently read the first two chapters of Ms. Parris' spy thriller. This story wastes no time taking the reader right into a world of espionage. Rose Clarke wants back into "the life" and must convince Fairchild to meet with Walter, a mysterious man who can reinstate Rose's status in the spy world, a world she's addicted to. I'm looking forward to finding out more about the world Parris has built. I like her style and the pacing of this novel.

From the book's opening chapter, you know this is a hard-boiled crime novel. Cal, known on the streets as Rocky, wakes up in a back alley. The description is vivid and confronting. He tries to break Roy from his drug-induced stupor as they have to hit the streets. Cal know that if anyone from his past recognizes him, he would meet a slow and painful death. One question hounds Cal, why did Tommy die of bad drugs when he was an alcoholic?
Excellent book with an interesting character and an interesting character. I enjoyed this refreshing approach to the genre.
I love a good detective story, especially when it involves a conspiracy. And when a case hangs on just one word, it has to be a page-turner.
This looks awesome. I love broken heroes. So much potential for awesome characterization.

I loved this book. Lots of tension, lots of mystery, great characters and humour throughout.
Compelling beginning to this conspiracy-theory plot focusing on the Middle East, Russia and the questionable role of various operators within the US government. Interesting likeable characters. Reads very authoritatively on all things military and security service related.
