The story is about a group of teenagers who were sent to a distant planet as frozen embryos. These children are raised by robots acting as surrogate parents - a fact the kids do not learn until they are 16 years old. At the age of 21, they leave their settlement to re-establish human civilization. It is an epic adventure, with plenty of action, many dangers along the way, and a villain with aspirations to rule the planet. The meaning of the book is twofold: It is a story of the relationship of humans to robots, posing the question, can we have feelings for machines?; it is also a story about what it would take to recreate modern western civilization from scratch. It is a big story, which is appropriate for YA and adults.
