En route to the Grand Place, the Central Square in Brussels, Belgium, three young men from a hostel wait for two girls outside a small shop famous for selling frites. All around them is the enchanting 15th century architecture stylized in the Gothic tradition of the Middle Ages while from the sky flurries of snow gather around the edges of street corners. In their winter coats, all around them is the scent of almonds and something toasted. They’re surrounded by chocolate shops and cafe stops, and the smiling faces of happy tourists. Unfortunately, tainting the historical preservation of European tradition is also the site of a very peculiar waffle shop that resembles an action that is all too American.
